The School for Good and EvilThis movie was amazing, as well as the fashion show.

The first look that caught my eye was Sophie’s (Sophia Anne Caruso) dress; it was a patchwork of a multitude of fabrics that layered to make a puffy, straight-out-of-a-storybook ensemble. This dress gave the wanted effect of looking ratty and elegant simultaneously, the rather perfect description of Sophie’s character.

The first two shots of the movie

Next to Sophie was her best friend, Agatha (Sophia Wylie), whose outfit was even more dreadful next to Sophie’s colorful display. A white blouse tucked into brown pants alone would not be so worthy of scorn, yet paired with an odd, large belt, a scarf that doubled as a tie, and a coat with way too many buttons, I was left shaking my head, and sadly, this wasn’t the worst outfit forced on Agatha.

The pink and purple gown Agatha is wearing when she confronts her teachers is the one I hate the most. The worst part is the sleeves. They make a full-length gown skirt look flat compared to them. But instead of extending all the way down her arm the sleeves become very thin and wrinkley. Then, the bodice of the dress is your grandmother’s sweater cut to fit the sleeves, hot pink with brooches and buttons to match the grandma aesthetic. The skirt of the dress has potential; the purple and pink flowers would be fine if they weren’t paired with the rest of the dress, but in all, the costume designers truly did Agatha dirty with this outfit.

The terrible dress Agatha had to wear

However, the rest of Agatha’s gowns were to die for. I wanted to be Agatha when she walked on screen in a off-the shoulder pink gown with yellow, blue, and pink flowers. This was the perfect princess dress, and I—an aspiring princess—would faint at the chance to just touch it. The large statement necklace matched the dress with two layers of pearls, which meet at a cluster of blue flowers. It was a perfect match for the dress and made the outfit feel both sophisticated and casual. This dress is absolutely amazing.

I also love Agatha’s light blue dress that she wears in the tower at final credits. It is Cinderella’s dress paired with a choker that has a pearl dangling onto her neck, and she also has small pearls tangled into her hair. It was simple but breathtaking; I applauded the homage to Cinderella and prince charming as Agatha’s prince, Tedros (Jamie Flatters), wears a corresponding prince charming suit with a sword and brown hair to match.

Tedros’s only other outfit worth mentioning is his all-black “evil”He wore a suit as he wore the bad-boy look. It was identical to the suit he wore for Agatha, but it was blackened. This suit was even more charming. He looked more refined, royal, and well-dressed. He was most at home in black.

Sophie is no stranger to all-black outfits. Sophie is not afraid to embrace her evil side and changes up her once-colorful look. She looked great doing it. Her first all black ensemble was my favorite. It featured a corset top, a long, narrow skirt, sheer arm sleeves, and the winged top a cloak with a red string. She radiates power and each outfit was unique. My second favorite adds some color to the outfit with a tight, dark, berry-patterned top. The sleeves puff up and become sheer, while the rest of the dress remains black. This dress is casual and reminds of Christmas to me.

I loved Sophie’s all-black era, but my favorite outfit was her white and pink dress in the tower scenes. It reminds me of armor designs with gold stitching dancing down the front of a white dress—then added is a hot pink train that puffs out behind her. She again wore sheer-like armbands to match the dress. These were purple. The knee-high boots added to the armored look of the dress; it looked like a warrior’s outfit, and it radiated power.

While almost every outfit in the movie was stunning, the actors’ premiere outfits were disappointing.

Caruso is the exception to this rule. Wylie wore a dress that a friend described as “stylish”. “the feather duster from Beauty and the Beast live-action movie, and that’s a good thing.” I agree—Wylie looked gorgeous. She wore a white feathery gown and dangly diamond earrings to match her character. She was radiant.

Caruso also got the memo and dressed in the elegant version of her character, Sophie’s, all dark dresses. She wore a tight top with a sleeveless, v-neck that dropped into a multi-layered skirt. It was paired with simple jewelry, and she looked amazing.

Director Paul Feig, in his all-white suit and four pins, is worth a mention. One pin is a swan. This symbol represents the schools the movie centers on. He also wears a black and silver tie, which looks like it is swirling. He finishes it off with a black cane, which makes him look very handsome.

There are also the atrocious costumes that I can’t believe were allowed onto red carpet.

The ensemble that I can’t stand is the bright green cropped polo paired with a bright green long skirt. Kerry Washington wore it, and she looked stunning in the movie with fairy godmother costumes. But, the wrong turn was taken for the premiere. I was shocked by the clash of casual dressy and dressy and the fact that the shirt is different from the skirt.

The worst outfit that could be worn at the premiere

Charlize was dressed in a sheer top by Dior, with a low bra underneath, and tucked into a long, slit skirt, high boots and fishnet leggings. Although the sheer shirt and bra looked a bit lazy, I have nothing bad to say about both the skirt and boots. The brooch was the worst thing about the dress. The bright pastel flowers falling in different directions made it look like it was rotting. It doesn’t add much to the outfit, and I hate it more now than if it hadn’t been there.

Although the bra look was not my favorite, it was semi-dressed for the occasion. Michelle Yeoh on the other hand seemed to be underdressed. Her outfit gave me the feeling of going out to a business dinner. She looked lovely, and I’m sure the dress is worth more than my whole closet combined, but it was not a premier-worthy dress.

The business dinner dress

Overall, I was amazed by the fashion in The School for Good and Evil and its premiere on Netflix. The movie is worth the effort to see the dresses. I will be diving into the movie aspects next week now that I have cleared my head about my ranting about the dressing choices.
