Milwaukee’s new fashion school is breaking down all barriers. One of Milwaukee’s most unique colleges is making its mark on the fashion scene, from the classroom to the runway.”I would like to put Milwaukee on the map and have it be a fashion designation and the first thing that creates that opportunity is preparation,”WISN 12 spoke to Lynne Dixon Speller, who is the founder of the Edessa School of Fashion and the academic dean.”We’re the only four-year college of fashion, designated college, in the United States with minority leadership,” Dixon Speller said. “Minorities and Blacks in specific are heavy consumers in the apparel industry. We’ve been supporting it for decades and decades. Now it’s time for us to run it.”Edessa, unlike traditional four-year liberal art schools, has been approved by the state as a new four year college. It offers bachelor’s degrees for fashion marketing and apparel designing.”When you come to Edessa School of Fashion, typically, you are certain what you want to do. You want to do fashion,”Dixon Speller stated. The name was inspired from family.”Edessa is my paternal grandmother. She heavily influenced me because as a child, she taught me how to sew,”Dixon Speller said.”My only regret is that she doesn’t know we’re doing this,” Dixon Speller said. “I do believe that more so than this being a fashion school, the fact that it’s higher education, that’s the thing that would impress her most.”She is continuing a legacy with a new generation.”It’s just a continuation of what she did back then,” Dixon Speller said. “When I look at her, I can tell her story and I can inspire students who have different hurdles, but to understand that hurdles are there to be conquered.”Edessa is on track for accreditation once its first group completes the four-year program.

One of Milwaukee’s most unique colleges is making its mark on Milwaukee’s fashion scene.
“I would like to put Milwaukee on the map and have it be a fashion designation and the first thing that creates that opportunity is preparation,” Lynne Dixon Speller told WISN 12.
She is the founder of and academic dean of Edessa School of Fashion.

The inspiration for the name came from family.
“Edessa is my paternal grandmother. She heavily influenced me because as a child, she taught me how to sew,” Dixon Speller said.
Edessa Meek was a Tuskegee University home economics graduate.
Her dreams, as a student of George Washington Carver & Booker T. Washington are now a reality.
“My only regret is that she doesn’t know we’re doing this,” Dixon Speller said. “I do believe that more so than this being a fashion school, the fact that it’s higher education, that’s the thing that would impress her most.”
She is continuing a legacy with a new generation.
