Houston Area Students Among Winners of Havenpark Communities Academic Scholarship

Havenpark announced the recipients of its scholarship program in April. Winners were awarded up to $2,500. $10,000Annually to pay for post-secondary education at colleges, universities, trade schools, and vocational schools. This initiative has grown exponentially in its second year from its pilot program in 2021 that awarded two scholarships to residents. IndianaAnd Ohio. Scholarship recipients participate in Havenpark’s mentoring program, which provides students – many of whom are first-generation college students—with encouragement, support, and resources to succeed in their journey to certificate or degree attainment.

“These students have the most inspirational stories, and I am excited to see where their future takes them,” Jason HaleHavenpark’s Education Success Program Director,. “Awarding them a scholarship is great, but our goal is getting them all the way to the finish line and where they want to be.”

Evelyn Guerrero SanchezShe just finished her first year at The University of Texas at AustinAccording to, her motivation to apply for the scholarship was personal. She was only a freshman in her first year. Guerrero SanchezSuccessfully navigated university life and took full advantage of all that college has to offer. This included active participation in many school and community organizations. She is currently involved in the Hispanic Business Student Association as well as the local church.

“I just want to make a better life for myself, and give my parents a better life,” Guerrero SanchezShe was a member of her high school track and cross-country teams and was also involved with National Honor Society, National Math Honor Society and the student council. “I really think that sports helped me develop my character. Especially with cross country with endurance – being able to endure everything that was going on and the struggles with college applications.”

Daysi MandujanoShe also recently completed her first year at The University of Texas at AustinShe is currently enrolled in the school’s pre-med program. She said that her mother encouraged her to continue her education, and her parents were delighted to learn that Havenpark had awarded her a renewable scholarship.

“Ever since I was little my parents always told me to go to school and be somebody in life,”Mandujano. “That was my biggest motivation and they have always been very supportive. They always said, ‘If we have the money, we will help you out and do everything’. It’s not just my parents, but also my grandparents will try to do everything for the kids.”

Andrea GallegosShe just completed her second year at Meredith CollegeIn Raleigh, North CarolinaWhile running cross-country and track, she studies fashion merchandising. Despite the difficulties of her first semester due to COVID which meant online courses and cancelled athletics, she was able to navigate through it with the help from school mentorship programs. Havenpark’s scholarship will assist her in covering the high cost of room & board.

“What I mostly worried about was housing – that’s really expensive,”Gallegos. “I would feel bad because I chose to come all the way out here (out-of-state). I know with this scholarship, it definitely helped me cover a lot of my housing payments for the next year.”

Israel GallegosAndrea’s younger brother is also a scholarship winner and plans to attend. Sam Houston State UniversityIn the fall, major in political sciences. His sister, he says, was a great support in his decision to continue his education. While counselors are often busy, his sister made it a priority to push him towards college. He was initially discouraged and didn’t know if he would be a recipient.

“God really helped us,”He said. “If I didn’t win it, I would probably go to community college because [universities] are expensive. With the money from the scholarship, I have a leg-up from what I thought I would have,”Gallegos.

Havenpark scholarship recipients can receive up to $10,000Each year may be renewed for up to three years or until a bachelor’s degree is earned. About two-thirds of this years recipients plan to attend four-year colleges or universities, while about one-third will attend a vocational-technical or two-year school.

The period for competitive scholarships in 2022 ran from December 15, 2021To. January 31, 2022About half of all applicants were awarded scholarships. To be eligible for consideration, applicants must have a minimum cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.5 or higher, be a current resident in Havenpark communities or have a parent/guardian that is a resident, and plan to enroll in or continue enrollment at an accredited two or four-year college or university or vocational-technical school. The United StatesFor the entire 2022-2023 academic calendar. An award may be transferred from a 2-year institution to a 4-year intuition, or vice versa.
