Montclair State University hosted its first day classes for the fall semester on Friday, September 2. Montclair State students participated in the event. “First-Day Fits,”This is a chance for students to display their first-day clothes in front of University Hall.

It can feel intimidating to begin college. This is where some students’ style plays a significant role in how they adapt and thrive in new environments. Many students use their fashion to express themselves or tap into their alter-egos.
Students were able to share their first-day looks and how they contribute to their confidence. Students shared their inspirations and shared their thoughts.
Mars Adams, a freshman television and film major, shared why her style helps her feel at ease with herself.
Adams wore an oversized jacket with ripped fishnets, paired with her favorite Steve Madden platform shoes. Adam explains that dressing like this wasn’t always a part of her everyday lifestyle, and how over time she was able to be comfortable in the clothing she truly loves.

“I wasn’t allowed to wear what I wanted in high school,” Adams said. “I’m finally able to wear what I want and do my makeup as much as I want. I feel like the confidence that lives in me expresses through my fashion.”

Courtney Theodule is a senior jurisprudence and law major. She advises incoming freshmen to be true to themselves, even if they want to get into fashion.
“Since you’re on campus, be unique and be the one that stands out,”Theodule stated. “Try not to be like everyone else or what everyone else wants to buy.”

Theodule began her fall semester in a brown-toned outfit. She paired her brown button-up shirt and pants with a blazer. “Protect Black Women”CISE, a black-owned brand, designed this bag. She topped it all with her Adidas sneakers, which are wildly patterned.
Theodule believes being on top of every trend doesn’t always make you the one that stands out.
“I like stuff that everyone doesn’t have,”Theodule stated. “I just feel like that makes me unique on its own.”

There has been a rapid rise in individualism since the outbreak of the coronavirus (COVID-19), pandemic. Over time, people have begun to latch onto each other’s styles and favorite clothing pieces. While this can be great, it stops people from searching for what they like and don’t like.
Sheridan Harney, a freshman biology major paired a black and a white crop top with ripped, low-rise jeans and black Doc Martens. Harney also wore a variety of accessories like a double grommet belt with studded bracelets, a star tote bag and a studded bracelet.

Harney’s style inspiration comes from the early 2000s. She also shared her advice on how others could incorporate things they are interested in through their style.
“Look at the media you consume and which parts [of] that you enjoy and just take all of it in,”Harney stated. “Just don’t be afraid to express yourself.”

Fashion statements are a way of expressing individuality. These students were able to personalize their look and took pride in their first day at school.
