NEW YORK – After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, Manhattan Fashion Week came back for the Fall season, with Filipino designers flashing their unique creations.
Velzon Hizon Velez, the producer-designer was busy getting 25 of his adult models ready and 15 of his child models at VHV Modeling School ready for the runway. Some of the models’ parents joined the ramp in an afternoon Filipino American Gala. Velez was joined for the autumn collection by four other designers.
Velez encouraged teens, children, and LGBTQs to feel confident and proud of their cultural heritage. At the gala, Velez also dressed the parents of the models in Filipiniana attires for the first time.
Velez opened VHV Talent Management Services, a fashion and talent school in Dinalupihan (Bataan), six months ago. He offers modeling classes as well online lessons. His talent school now includes drawing, performing arts, dance, and tutoring in academic Math. In partnership with Studio 8 Academy, Dave Ocampo, president of Designers Circle of the Philippines, he will soon open a branch at Quezon City.

Simoun Andres, a Pasig City designer, was a former HR Supervisor, and a laundry shop owner. But Simoun always had an eye for fashion. Ramily Santillan from Bacolod City was his mentor and taught him the basics in garment-making. After creating an ensemble to wear for his sister in a beauty contest, he began his fashion journey by designing wedding dresses for friends.
Andres made the decision to further his skills and to focus full time on fashion design. He has since produced wearable art pieces, and is a sought-after designer in the fashion industry. “Limitless possibilities await those who return to their origins, and intensively prepare for the future that awaits,”Andres, who continues to learn and improve his skills.
Thad Carreon’s Collection f/w 2022 is dynamic and simple but elegant fashion. Each piece is versatile and wearable every day. Even dresses can be turned into evening gowns with minimal tweaks and twists. His timeless, sensible pieces are attention-grabbing. They project elegance and simplicity while also being timeless. Carreon presented 20 styles for Fall-Winter fashion. He plans to expand the market beyond the Philippines by presenting more fashion shows.

Jail Jeans was launched on October 20, 2008, and the collection is now called “79 Karen Reset Collection.”Chris Jasler, designer, explained. “The inspiration of my collection is based on my loving sister’s dance movements, her posture and the color combination of her costumes. She was a professional Latin dancer, but she passed on earlier during the Covid-19 pandemic. This collection is my way of saying I love her so much, I’m thankful for the time we shared and we all miss her dearly.”
Jail Jeans has a vision to bring the collection into New York, London and Los Angeles. Jasler is looking for a store that sells all-Filipino denim brands. For the theme of his show, he used an upbeat drums remix, as VHV models paraded 15 women’s wear and 15 men’s wear items.
Samay Designs By Antonio Vacacela, a New York-based designer, joined the show. His Latin style is a modern homage to his Ecuadorian roots. VHV Collection was performed to saxophone accompaniment. Check out the Youtube video https://youtu.be/8_9FDVn14KA
