As soon TikTok influencer Lex NicoletaI was all in when the internet introduced me to the coastal grandmother aesthetic. The look is easy to understand if you imagine yourself as Diane Keaton or Martha Stewart making dinner at her beach home. The vibes feature a neutral color palette, classic silhouettes, and lightweight fabrics. The look can be easy, but it can be difficult to achieve. I set myself the challenge of creating two outfits that were completely coastal grandmother-friendly, without spending a lot.

You’ll see below that all my key pieces cost less than $50. These items were paired with accessories and shoes I already owned, which I also shopped for. Continue reading to see my looks and decide if coastal-grandmother fashion is something you would like to try.
Look 1: A simple, elegant neutral dress and a cozy cream sweater
Key Piece:This Old Navy Cotton Poplin Cami Maxi Swing Dress ($36; originally $45) is extremely comfortable. It also has my most favorite feature, pockets! It runs a bit large so I recommend sizing down. It has held up well after being washed twice. It’s a shame, but I really do need it in more colors.
Accessories:These Universal Thread Holden Platform Sport Sandals ($30), which are great for everyday walking, were paired with my comfy dress. The straps can be adjusted with Velcro. I also tied this Who What Wear Collection Charlotte Cropped Cardigan ($64, originally $128) over my shoulder — it’s been my trusty layering piece all summer long; the cropped style looks great with dresses.
Take a look at these Outfit NotesHow does this channel coastal grandmother look? For starters, the neutral color palette is key — you should keep your look to shades of tan, beige, and white. This outfit is great for the beach because of its lightweight fabric and shoes. For coastal grandmothers, outerwear is limited to sweaters. This is why I paired this look with my cream cardigan.
Look 2: Gingham Blouse & White Shorts topped with a Woven Hat
The Key PiecesThis Old Navy Puff-Sleeve Swing Blouse ($20; originally $35) is great for me. I have a D cup, but it’s so supportive that I don’t even need a bra. The quality is exceptional and the puff sleeves have a nice design. The blouse was paired with my favorite Old Navy High-Waisted Slouchy Straight-Off Non-Stretch Jean Shorts ($24; originally $35). They have a five-inch inseam. I am loving the longer, more trendy shorts of this summer.
Accessories: I completed my look with this adorable Familyhouse Handmade Woven 100% Raffia Bow Sun Hat ($6), which has the sweetest surprise in the back — a big woven bow. I also wore my supercomfortable Birdies Cardinal sneakers ($145); it’s so comfortable, you feel like you are walking on little pillows.
Take a look at these Outfit NotesI don’t know why the woven hat doesn’t instantly give off the coastal-grandmother look. Diane Keaton would wear this hat on one of her beach walks in a romcom. This short is perfect for summer and every coastal granddaughter should have white jeans in her closet. My simple white sneakers can be worn to run errands in my adorable little town.
