BENGALURU:  One of the best things about fashion is that it is accepting of changing artforms and cultures. The history of print on tee shirts is a complex one. These are not just for a select few.

After B-town stars like Alia Bhatt and Kubbra Sait, Akshay Kuloor, and Arjun Kapoor, who have all been wearing Huemn’s graffiti t-shirts, the trend is now catching on with Bengaluru’s young people. Haya Rukiya from Capsul (a multi-brand retail shop) believes that streetwear is growing in popularity because it is included in mainstream fashion.

“Earlier streetwear was made of many popular subcultures like skate, graffiti, break dance etc. A few years ago, many luxury and mainstream brands started accepting streetwear, thereby blending it into mainstream fashion. This broke barriers and introduced it to a wider population,”Rukiya, a city-based Rukiya. She says that these styles are in vogue now that many celebrities and influencers are wearing them.

Rukiya’s words are reflected when one sees how influenced the followers of Rida Tharana, a model and content creator, are by her style. Tharana, who likes to experiment with her looks and graffiti-making, did explore the art before jumping on the bandwagon. Tharana has grown to love graffiti art because she attended a workshop. “Graffiti is something that is painted on the wall and has its own exposure, but the artform itself is so catchy because it’s not a canvas painting.

The baggy T-shirts are back and graffiti tees are a style statement. It is not just about what you are wearing, the artworks also reflect your character,” she adds. You don’t have to choose luxury brands to get a graffiti print T-shirt. The hunt is made easier by Bengaluru’s host of many graffiti artists who also customize merchandise.

Rabah, a graffiti artist from the City, goes by the nickname ‘left-hander’Customizing t-shirts for clients, has seen a surge of demand, but it is still a niche market. “Now, actors and celebs are wearing it as a status symbol. Many international brands are also promoting graffiti because it is underground and this artform is gaining huge respect across the world,”Rabah says that his t-shirt collection starts at Rs 2,000

Brands like Zara and H&M have included graffiti t-shirts in their collections, which shows the popularity of graffiti tee-shirts. Irfan Ishaque, who is a big fan of graffiti work, said, “These days it is very common to find such t-shirts in brands like Zara and H&M, and many youngsters are sporting street styles.”
