Trench coats were first worn by soldiers in the First World War. They have since become a staple of fashion and a holy grail for outerwear thanks to their versatility.

Trenches can be worn over chunky knits throughout the year, or layered over dresses and jeans in the unpredictable British spring and Summer.

The classic beige trench design is unchanged from its original iterations. However, modern interpretations of the coat include denim, leather and borg versions, as well as hooded, patent, and borg versions. Trench coats in military style were seen all over the spring/summer 2022 collections. They were seen from Toteme, Burberry to Max Mara, Regina Pyo, and Diesel. While leather trenches dominated Diesel’s catwalks, Prada and Diesel spotted them. This season, denim is making a comeback and it can be used to make a trench coat.

    Best: Overall

    Rating: 10/10

In keeping with a classic trench coat, Mango’s offering boasts large lapels, long sleeves with cuff loops, a back vent, adjustable belt and lightweight lining. Its slightly oversized fit is not only on trend but lends the piece to layering during the colder months, while its light khaki colourway harks back to the OG trench from Burberry (though costing around £1,300 less). Detailing like the spread collar and sweeping peak lapels – emphasised by the lack of buttons – help make the Mango trench a statement coat for everyday wear.
